More Information

A social media site is one where the content of the website is created by users. Rather than the traditional sites where all the information is put on by the person who created the website, in the case of social networking sites, it is the people who use the website that put the information on. The task of a creator (owner) of the website is therefore just to provide a platform for users to share and generate data.

Social media websites usually have open memberships, which means that anyone can become a member, regardless of their hobbies, beliefs, etc. This means also that anyone can upload and exchange data, unless they violate the terms and conditions of a given website.

The most widely known type of social media site is a social networking site. A social networking site is an online platform on which people can connect, befriend or follow people. Information can easily be shared and items that have both personal and professional content can easily be posted on the site. Normally on social networking sites your actions are recorded and sent out on the so-called ‘newsfeeds’. They inform each user about all the recent actions of their friends.

Social networking websites facilitate the grouping together of specific individuals or organisations. When you are part of a social networking site you can begin to create your own network of friends who share your interests or goals. In theory, any site can become a social networking site as any site can be enhanced with the extra functionality provided by a social networking site.
